Located at 1600 Rockland Road in nearby Wilmington, the Nemours Estate was built by Alfred du Pont in the early 1900s. Nestled on 200 acres, the mansion is a graceful and elegant example of French neoclassical design. It features the largest formal French gardens in the U.S., beautiful architectural details, and a chauffeur’s garage housing a large collection of vintage cars.

A self-guided tour (with trained interpretive staff available) will take you throughout the three floors and outdoor areas. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. The Nemours Estate is generally open from April through December each year.

Cooch’s Bridge

In nearby Newark, DE, you’ll find the Cooch’s Bridge Historic Site. Also known as the Battle of Iron Hill, the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge was fought in September 1777, about a week prior to the Battle of Brandywine.

Continental Army and militia forces were stationed at the bridge when British soldiers under the command of General William Howe marched toward the area. A battle ensued, and the British forces drove the colonists across the bridge.

The historic site is in the process of becoming a public site. While it’s currently in private hands, access is granted to those who register for a free tour (seasonal availability).

Hale-Byrnes House

If you opted for the tour of Cooch’s Bridge, the next logical stop on your itinerary is the Hale-Byrnes House, not far from the bridge in Newark. Built in 1750, this house is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Following the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge, General George Washington held a council of war at the Hale-Byrnes House. Outside the home is the 300-year-old George Washington Witness Tree of Delaware. A Witness Tree is generally centuries old and was known to be present during a great historic or cultural event occurring at the site.

Located in Wilmington, the Delaware Museum of Natural History is an artistically designed space that celebrates and preserves the natural heritage of the local region and other ecosystems throughout the world.
