New Claymont Public Library: Cornerstone to a Community
Darley Green: at the heart of a revitalized Claymont
Community leaders and state officials are about to realize their dream of having a state-of-the-art library in Claymont, with the new facility just off Darley Road slated to open in July 2013. Sitting on 7.5 acres, the ultra modern Claymont Public Libraryis going to be “absolutely spectacular” according to Governor Jack Markell, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony this March.
Markell has touted the library as the new centerpiece of a revitalized Claymont; the $9.5 million project represents the culmination of hard work and concerted efforts to create a contemporary library in a park-like setting that will accommodate all Claymont residents. The new library will be a welcome change from the existing 7,000 square foot facility, which is housed in the community center.
The Claymont Public Library sits on land that was donated by the Commonwealth Group, developers of the adjacent Darley Green townhouses and condominiums, where sales have been brisk. “The library will add a ton of viability and a sense of place to the site,” said Don Robitzer, CEO of the Commonwealth Group. The library is central to the developer’s visionof an inclusive neighborhood, where residents are walking distance to everything they want or need.
Community pillars like New Castle County Executive Paul Clark are thrilled about the opportunities the new library will afford. "It met all the requirements I wanted because I wanted to build libraries that are in a park like setting that were adjacent to bus routes, that can help communities, who weren't buried into them because I think that's a better way of doing it, and I think we're going to have people have a first rate library in Claymont, that's long overdue," said Clark.
State-of-the-art Claymont Public Library: opening soon!
Boasting 17,500 square feet, the new Claymont Public Librarywill accommodate the growing community needs by offering:
- An improved and larger collection for all ages
- Wireless access

- An increased number of workstations with computers
- A separate children’s area for story time and small group activities
- An expanded young-adult area with teen collections

The library’s covered patio area will allow for a range of outdoor activities during warmer months and a drive-up window will give patrons the added convenience of checking out materials without leaving their cars. The adjoining parkland around the library will have walking paths, lush greenery and other amenities.
Both the county and Delaware state have contributed just over $8 million toward the project, with the rest of the funding raised by the Friends of the Claymont Library, who secured an additional $750,000.
