New Elementary School Comes to the Town of Whitehall
The local community overwhelmingly approved a $268 million referendum to upgrade local education centers and build three new schools, including one in the Town of Whitehall. The 840-student elementary school will go on a 13-acre plot of land that was donated to the district.
Educational opportunities for the neighborhood are already top-class, but the new school is expected to accommodate the growing student base in the area. The Appoquinimink School District has added 766 students in the past two years. More than 3,000 students have joined the district over the past decade. All told the district serves over 9,800 New Castle County students.
Appoquinimink School District is ranked #1
The U.S. Department of Education recently ranked the Appoquinimink School District the “number one public school district in Delaware.” The results speak for themselves, with students earning over 85% proficiency in math and reading. Not only are students given the tools they need to meet modern demands for knowledge in language and technology, but cultural awareness, positive work ethic and problem solving skills are stressed in the classrooms, too.
Extracurricular activities like theater, sports, and government clubs encourage every student to get involved. The motto of the Appoquinimink School District is to “give their kids the world.”
Why live in the Town of Whitehall?
The educational opportunities for young children is one of the many reasons to live in Delaware’s Town of Whitehall. The unique New Urban community fosters a sense of community with large, old-fashioned front porches close to community centers, shops, businesses, and parks with walking trails.
The architecture and park-like setting was also designed with the characteristics of historic neighborhoods in mind. Community planners along with the Welfare Foundation want the Town of Whitehall to create a legacy for the next century by returning us to walkable living.
“We want to be Delaware’s next great place where people can stay home when they’re not at work instead of having to get in their cars,” said Welfare Foundation COO Chris Grundner. “Until now, the notion of walking down the block to get a cup of coffee or walking your children to school were, in many ways, notions of a bygone era. When it all comes together, the residents of Whitehall will have access to most of the things they’ll need right here in their new hometown.”
