These are the standards that were surveyed:

• Park acreage per person
• Music venues per square mile
• Population diversity
• Museums per square mile
• Percent of population between 20 and 34 years old
• Fast food restaurants per square mile (the fewer the better)
• Bars per square mile
• Big box stores per square mile (the fewer the better)
• Movie theaters per square mile
• Theater companies per square mile

After all the data was compiled, Movoto then reviewed the 50 most populous cities throughout the nation, rating them from 1 to 50 based on each criterion. Philadelphia placed at number 9, just ahead of Portland, Oregon. And the surprising first-place winner was Oakland, California, which came in ahead of Boston, NYC, and San Francisco. Philly nudged ahead of Portland largely because of its ethnic diversity and extensive range of fascinating museums – from the classic to the silly.
