Celebrate the 2022 Holidays With Seasonal Activities in Kennett Square!

It’s beginning to look a lot like the holidays in Kennett Square, and you’re invited! In this close-knit community, the festivities traditionally kick off with the Kennett Square Holiday Light Parade, which always takes place soon after Thanksgiving. Then, you can keep the party rolling with excellent deals on great gifts during Small Business Saturday, followed by the Kennett Square Holiday Village Market. There’s no shortage of fun ways to celebrate and prepare for the winter holidays in our little corner of PA!

Kennett Square Holiday Light Parade

The ever-popular Holiday Light Parade is returning for its 10th time this year! Kennett Square residents love this annual event, which is taking place on November 25, starting at 6:15 PM. You’ll want to arrive a bit earlier, however, to enjoy the DJ’s holiday music skills. The parade will get started with a performance by dancers from the Longwood Performing Arts.

Do note that the parade follows a different route this year in an attempt to reduce traffic congestion. The party will get started at the Cypress and South Broad Streets intersection. The parade heads north toward State Street, then west along State Street and ending at Center Street.

Every year, the parade gets a little better and a little bigger. What started with just a handful of participants has turned into an 80-float celebration. In addition to the floats and dancers, you can also enjoy a music troupe and classic cars and other vehicles decorated with festive lights. Immediately after the parade, Santa and Mrs. Claus will light the tree.

Small Business Saturday

After enjoying the Holiday Light Parade on November 25, you’ll want to return to the downtown area the following day. Nationwide, Small Business Saturday is held on Saturday, November 26, and Kennett Square is no exception. Come on out to support the many local businesses and vendors that are offering a diverse assortment of holiday gifts, décor items, and more. Plan to stay for lunch or dinner, as the downtown area in Kennett Square has plenty of incredible restaurants to choose from.

Kennett Square Holiday Village Market

Every year, the Kennett Square Holiday Village Market is held on the first and second Saturdays and Sundays in December. This year, you can visit on December 3, 4, 10, and 11 from 11 AM to 5 PM. You’ll find the market at The Creamery—a favorite local community gathering place and eatery. During the market’s operating hours, there will be a free shuttle bus to and from The Creamery and the downtown area.

Despite the name, the market is really more like a community festival. Enjoy holiday shopping at dozens of local artisans’ booths, grab something tasty at the food trucks, roast a s’more over the fire pit, and check out the ice sculpture demonstrations. There’s also live music, festive drinks, and more!

Kennett Square Receives Grant for Public Greenways and Trail Restoration

Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, has long been a vibrant, lovely place to live and visit, with plenty of wide open, green spaces, tree-lined streets, parks, and other opportunities for outdoor recreation. Now, thanks to a generous grant, Kennett Square is about to get a little greener, and it’s going to offer even more incredible amenities to its residents.

The borough of Kennett Square has announced it has received a $125,000 grant from the Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program (GTRP). It’s exciting news for residents of this close-knit community who enjoy getting fresh air and exercise in the great outdoors.

Major project in the works

The generous grant will be used to create and improve Red Clay Park. In April of 2022, it was announced that Red Clay Park would be created out of 30 acres of green space in the eastern part of Kennett Square. The tract of land extends from Kennett High School to Anson B. Nixon Park, with Race Street serving as its western boundary and Walnut and Dalmatian Streets bordering the land to the east. This tract of land has long had gravel pathways across land owned by multiple parties, both public and private. In 2020, the owners began to collaborate on a project that would see the land turned into Red Clay Park.

An initial $800,000 investment got the project off the ground, and now, with the additional $125,000 grant, the stakeholders can further improve the area. The funds are expected to be used to transform a 33,000-square foot parcel on the property into a recreational amenity. The project will involve developing access to Red Clay Creek and building new sections of the trail, complete with picnic tables.

As part of the overall Red Clay Park project, the stakeholders will use some of the funds for environmental restoration efforts. The streambanks will be stabilized, and a reforestation initiative will be launched to prevent erosion. In addition, invasive species in the area will be removed.

Kennett Greenway provides incredible amenities to residents

The Red Clay Park project is just one step in a larger redevelopment and improvement project taking place in the Kennett Greenway, which is a 14-mile loop of bicycle and pedestrian trails. When the project is complete, those using the Greenway will have easy access to points of interest along the loop, including nature-watching spots and local businesses/services.

Everything You Need to Know About Kennett Square’s Mushroom Cap Half Marathon

Kennett Square is undoubtedly the Mushroom Capital of the World. Not only do its residents by and large have an enduring appreciation for fungi, but the region is also responsible for producing more than half of all of the mushrooms that supply the U.S. Each year, the charming Pennsylvania town throws a popular mushroom festival, and you’ll find the town’s signature product livening up dishes at many of its restaurants. When you’re ready to burn off some calories after indulging at the fine restaurants in Kennett Square, you can sign up for the Mushroom Cap Half Marathon. If you’re thinking of running or supporting this year, here’s everything you need to know about the popular footrace.

The half marathon by the numbers

If you’ve never run a half marathon before, you should know that you’re committing to 13.1 miles. If that seems like a bit too much for your current training regimen, you can sign up for the Fungi 5 Miler instead. Both races take place on November 5th this year.

Plan on being at the start line (600 South Broad Street/Genesis parking lot) in plenty of time for the start time, which is at 8:00 AM for both races. Both races must finish by 11:30. Don’t forget that you’ll need to pick up your race packet. You can pick it up from 6:00 to 7:30 AM at the start line on the day of the race. Alternatively, if you’d rather sleep in a little bit, you could pick it up on November 4th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.

A gear check tent will be available. If you wish to check your gear, you may do so from 6:30 AM onward, but you must pick it back up again before the gear check tent closes at 12:00 PM. The race organizers are not responsible for any lost items, and they caution runners not to leave valuables in checked bags.

Here’s where you’ll be running

Each year, the Mushroom Cap Half Marathon takes runners through the heart of Kennett Square. Enjoy running through architecturally exquisite neighborhoods (with 100+ year-old live oaks), quiet country roads (look for the historic barns), landmarks from the Revolutionary War, and of course, local mushroom farms.

The specific route is subject to slight tweaking from year to year, and depending on weather conditions, road closures, and other issues that may arise on race day. You’ll find the most updated course map in your race packet.

Don’t miss the after party!

Your reward for sweating it out for 13 miles is the Mushroom Madness After Party. Back at the start line, enjoy complimentary beer and delectable treats from local partners like Baily’s Dairy Chocolate Milk, South Mill Shrooms, and The Produce Place.

Kaboburritos

Kaboburritos is a fantastically unique eatery at 148 West State St. It began life as a scooter-based mobile food stand in Gwangju, South Korea, where founders Carlos and Stephanie Vargas were teaching English. At first, The Kabob Scooter sold only kabobs, but quickly expanded to Mexican and Mediterranean food. After reincarnating as a food truck in South Korea and then putting down roots in Kennett Square as a permanent restaurant, Kaboburritos has quickly become a favorite with locals. Choose from delicious Mexican and Mediterranean meals, like stuffed grape leaves followed by street-style tacos. Follow it with churros or baklava for dessert.

If you live in Kennett Square, PA, there are multiple ice cream shops nearby where you can find the real stuff—homemade, small batch ice cream with flavors both traditional and inventive enough to please even the pickiest of palates.

La Michoacana Homemade Ice Cream

This Mexican fusion ice cream parlor serves up tropical flavors in cones, cups, shakes, and sundaes. They have more than 75 flavors, with 35 flavors available on any given day. Try tropical flavors like toasted coconut, mango, or banana in a waffle bowl, churro cup, banana split, cone, or popsicle.

The Creamery of Kennett Square

Locals love The Creamery on Birch Street. It’s housed in the original Eastern Condensed Milk Company building, established in 1902 and meticulously renovated in 2016. The Creamery is the place to be for live entertainment and amazing food. Enjoy lunch or dinner, then head over to the onsite Creamery Ice Cream Truck, offering shakes and cones with a rotating menu of flavors.

Despite the name of The Creamery, they don’t actually make their own homemade ice cream onsite. Rather, they source their frozen treats from nearby Woodside Farm Creamery in Hockessin, DE. All of Woodside’s ice cream is homemade in small batches. Their ice cream menu features all of the flavors you’d expect to find, like chocolate chip cookie dough, chocolate, and chocolate peanut butter, plus some unexpected flavors, such as lemon coconut, bacon (as seen on Food Network’s “Unwrapped”), and motor oil (coffee ice cream with caramel and fudge swirls).

What Is the Closest Ocean Beach to Kennett Square, Pennsylvania?

The closest ocean beach to Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, is Deemers Beach along River Road in New Castle, Delaware; however, Deemers Beach is not well-developed, and you’ll likely want to head for nearby Maryland instead to enjoy North East Beach at Elk Neck State Park. In fact, there are plenty of beautiful, swimmer-friendly beaches within one or two hours of Kennett Square, including beaches in Maryland, New Jersey, and Delaware. They make perfect day trips or weekend getaways!

North East Beach, Maryland

Elk Neck State Park in Maryland is just about one hour’s drive away from Kennett Square. It’s located in the northeast sector of Chesapeake Bay at the confluence of Elk River, North East River, and the Susquehanna River. Thanks to all of the fresh water hitting the ocean at this point, you’ll only rarely see jellyfish near the beach. This expansive public beach (expect to pay a small fee) offers all the facilities swimmers expect, like restrooms and showers, plus a sizable picnic area with grills. There is also a food and supplies shop on site, but do be aware that there are no lifeguards to watch over the swimmers, so it’s best not to go swimming alone. You can visit North East Beach from 9 a.m. until sunset.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Renowned Rehoboth Beach in Delaware is about two hours away from Kennett Square, and it’s most definitely a must-visit destination for anyone who loves sun and surf. In addition to the obvious attraction—the ocean itself—Rehoboth Beach boasts a fantastic, mile-long boardwalk. Along it, you’ll find charming shops, restaurants, various amusements, and other amenities.

Consider planning your visit to coincide with one of the many events and festivals hosted at Rehoboth Beach throughout the year. Enjoy live entertainment at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand on Rehoboth Avenue. The annual Summer Concert Series alone brings over 40 bands here each year—and there is no admission charge!

Cape May City Beaches, New Jersey

Cape May, New Jersey, is about two hours away from Kennett Square. If you opt to spend a day or a weekend here, you’ll have more than one beach to choose from. In fact, there are over a dozen! A few of the beaches, like the Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area and Sunset Beach, are fun to stroll along and maybe toss a Frisbee, but swimming is not recommended. At more than a dozen of the other beaches, such as The Cove and Steger Beach, swimming is very much encouraged. You’ll need to purchase a beach tag (one beach tag grants access to all of the beaches for one person), and lifeguards are present at all of the beaches at which swimming is encouraged.
