Philly’s Burgeoning Restaurant Scene

Philadelphia homes close to all the action

For amateur or veteran foodies who’ve been following the local news, Philadelphia’s restaurant scene is making headlines with new openings every month. The trade publication, Nation’s Restaurant News, recently announced that Philly is among the “10 hottest restaurant markets in the United States.” Laurence Steinberg of Fameco Real Estate explains that Philadelphia's prime location between Washington and New York makes it a gateway for new concept eateries, particularly in the casual sector. Several retail chains have been looking for opportunities to expand in untapped cities such as Philly, appealing to tourists and local denizens. So whether you’re craving dessert from The Cheesecake Factory or a perfectly seasoned steak frites dinner, all the culinary bases are covered in Philadelphia.

Philly boasts an exciting mix of chain and independent restaurants

A recent feature published in Philly.com highlights the city’s thriving restaurant scene, and details the impending opening of Medium Rare – a relaxed yet avant-garde eatery specializing in beef dishes (a $19.95 steak frites dinner is their signature plate). Owner Mark Bucher grew up in the City of Brotherly Love and after scouting his hometown for potential locales, found an up-and-coming City Center. Bucher plans to open Medium Rare this summer on the 1600 block of Sansom Street, just down the road from the posh Ocean Prime – another crowd favorite.  And a Luke's Lobster restaurant is slated for the end of the block in the coming months.

Both chain and independent restaurants have plenty of room for growth, explains Steven Gartner, president of Metro Commercial Real Estate. By late August or early September, Chestnut Square near Drexel University will have branches of the New York-based Joe Coffee Bar and Shake Shack burger shop, in addition to local restaurants Zama and Zuvino. Those who want to sink their teeth into a juicy burger will be looking forward to the opening of Good Stuff Eatery, a celebrated Washington burger chain operated by former Top Chef contestant, Spike Mendelsohn.

Philadelphia has no shortage of gastronomic options, and the following hotspots have been rated among the city’s ten best restaurants this past year, so be sure to give them a try:

  • Federal Donuts
  • Opa
  • Oysteria
  • Fish
  • Lacroix Chima Brazilian Steakhouse
  • Bistrot La Minett
