Ranch-Style Homes vs. Two Story: Which Is Best?

Home buyers have a lot of tough decisions to make. Which school district is best? Which planned community has the right amenities? And would a ranch or two-story home be better?

Of course, there are plenty of advantages to both ranch-style and two-story homes in Delaware. Perhaps the easiest way to determine which is best for your family is to consider your current living arrangements. If you have a starter home that’s a ranch, perhaps you’re already longing for a second story. If you have a two-story home, maybe you’re looking to downsize? Consider the following factors when making your choice.

Benefits of single-story homes

Ranch-style homes are uniquely charming, and they offer more space than you might think—especially if you choose an open floorplan. Many people find one-story homes to be highly convenient. For instance, there’s no need to move laundry baskets and vacuum cleaners between floors.

Perhaps the most compelling reason to purchase a ranch-style home is if you have young children. A home without stairs is one less safety issue to worry about when a toddler is underfoot. Safety is also a concern for home buyers who are approaching their golden years. If you intend on aging in place, a one-story home is a safer choice, and there will be no stairs to trouble arthritic joints. You might also want to choose a ranch home if there’s a possibility that an aging parent will move in with your family at some point.

Benefits of two-story homes

Families with younger kids and/or teens often prefer two-story homes because they offer some separation between living areas. Teens who like to stay up later can watch TV downstairs while their parents get some much-needed rest upstairs in the master suite.

Another major benefit of a two-story house doesn’t actually pertain to the house itself. Since half of the square footage is located on top of the other half, a large two-story home won’t take up a lot of space on the lot. This means you’ll have a more generous yard, which is particularly appealing for gardening enthusiasts and families with dogs.

Speaking of yards and landscaping, you’ll have spectacular views from a second-floor window.

Meet your perfect match at The Town of Whitehall

Montchanin Builders offers home buyers the best of both worlds. You can move into two-story or ranch-style homes in our Delaware community of The Town of Whitehall. The Salisbury model is a stately two-story home. It features an award-winning floorplan, with more than 3,800 square feet, four bedrooms, and three and a half baths—plus a second floor activity room!

Interior Concepts Brings the Modern Rustic Revival to The Town of Whitehall

Can a home embody both Old World charm and sleek modern styling? Can new construction successfully bring the look and feel of nature inside while boasting modern amenities? Here at Montchanin Builders, we enjoy a challenge. That’s why we’re pleased to partner with Interior Concepts to take custom building to a higher level. No planned community is better suited to this approach than The Town of Whitehall in Middletown, Delaware. The Town of Whitehall is located on the south bank of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. It is a uniquely walkable, mixed-use, family oriented community designed with both nostalgic ambience and modern convenience in mind.

Universal appeal of the modern rustic aesthetic

The modern rustic trend is making waves because it brings nature to suburban living. These homes invite families to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life. These homes are designed in a luxurious way that embraces the simplicity of nature. The rustic revival style creates a rich world of the grain and knottiness of wood, the solid feel of raw stone, the vintage look of non-reflective, industrial metal, and roughly textured fabrics. The simple beauty of the natural state of things offers comfort at home, even as families enjoy modern amenities and nearby attractions.

Defining characteristics of the modern rustic trend

Modern rustic is at once timeless and timely, excitingly modern and patiently vintage. With the expert designers of Interior Concepts and Montchanin Builders working together, the new, custom homes in The Town of Whitehall will break the mold of the planned community model. We aren’t satisfied with creating cookie cutter houses and assembly line communities. Our design experts embrace the uniqueness of each home because we understand that no two families are alike.

Thanks to the ingenuity of our professional designers, our homes simultaneously reflect warmth and monochromatic designs, with rooms that are both eclectic and charming. The rustic revival embraces the look of rugged nature with its raw stone, distressed wood floors with wide planks, and exposed beams. As soon as you step in the door, you’re greeted by soothing, earthy colors that are nicely balanced with white or paneled walls and airy, high ceilings. From the built-in bookshelves to the master suite fireplace, rustic revival homes have everything a family could desire.

New Elementary School Comes to the Town of Whitehall

back to schoolThe local community overwhelmingly approved a $268 million referendum to upgrade local education centers and build three new schools, including one in the Town of Whitehall. The 840-student elementary school will go on a 13-acre plot of land that was donated to the district.

Educational opportunities for the neighborhood are already top-class, but the new school is expected to accommodate the growing student base in the area. The Appoquinimink School District has added 766 students in the past two years. More than 3,000 students have joined the district over the past decade. All told the district serves over 9,800 New Castle County students.

Appoquinimink School District is ranked #1

The U.S. Department of Education recently ranked the Appoquinimink School District the “number one public school district in Delaware.” The results speak for themselves, with students earning over 85% proficiency in math and reading. Not only are students given the tools they need to meet modern demands for knowledge in language and technology, but cultural awareness, positive work ethic and problem solving skills are stressed in the classrooms, too.

Extracurricular activities like theater, sports, and government clubs encourage every student to get involved. The motto of the Appoquinimink School District is to “give their kids the world.”

Why live in the Town of Whitehall?

The educational opportunities for young children is one of the many reasons to live in Delaware’s Town of Whitehall. The unique New Urban community fosters a sense of community with large, old-fashioned front porches close to community centers, shops, businesses, and parks with walking trails.

The architecture and park-like setting was also designed with the characteristics of historic neighborhoods in mind. Community planners along with the Welfare Foundation want the Town of Whitehall to create a legacy for the next century by returning us to walkable living.

“We want to be Delaware’s next great place where people can stay home when they’re not at work instead of having to get in their cars,” said Welfare Foundation COO Chris Grundner. “Until now, the notion of walking down the block to get a cup of coffee or walking your children to school were, in many ways, notions of a bygone era. When it all comes together, the residents of Whitehall will have access to most of the things they’ll need right here in their new hometown.”

The Town of Whitehall: a Walkable Community

Montchanin Homes - The SalisburyThe Town of Whitehall is Delaware’s newest upscale neighborhood of estate homes located just north of Middletown.  The developers of this unique community wanted to create a not just a collection of beautiful dwellings, but a walkable town replete with parks, nature trails, playgrounds, an elementary school, coffee shops, home-grown businesses and even a family doctor. While it may sound too good to be true, this nostalgic vision has been in the making for years, and is finally coming together.

Delaware, like many other states, has few walkable communities — places where a cup of coffee or a slice of pizza is a 5-minute walk from your doorstep. The Town of Whitehall aims to change all that by putting the “neighbor” back in neighborhood and giving residents the ability to connect with one another while enjoying an outdoor BBQ, a bike ride, or a meal in town – all without the need for a car.

Benefits of walkable community

As The Town of Whitehall continues to mature, the community will feature a wide array of event spaces, businesses, entertainment offerings and restaurants — places that invite interaction and connection among neighbors. When honing their idea of a walkable community that gives residents convenient access to retail, entertainment and nature, founders looked to other success stories around the nation. In the end they determined that making the daily life of residents more fulfilling was the single most important aspect of creating such a community.

Beyond broad sidewalks, miles of biking trails, quiet gathering spaces and a healthy smattering of local businesses, residents can look forward to quality homes that feature the craftsmanship of reputable Delaware home builders.

Brand new 3,4 and 5-bedroom homes are currently available, including the Sassafras Series of estate homes by Montchanin Builders. Home features include airy floor plans, grand front porches, gourmet kitchens and spacious rec rooms. The Town of Whitehall welcomes empty nesters, singles, families and retirees with cottage and courtyard homes, as well as twins and townhomes, with prices starting at $298,900.

These home sites feature a natural backdrop of wooded splendor, close to the Chesapeake and Delaware canal. If you’re looking for a more personalized living space at The Town of Whitehall, Montchanin can help bring your vision to life with the custom home of your dreams.
