Philadelphia Fall highlights

Bloktoberfest, October 19
Marking its fifth year on South Street, Bloktoberfest returns for more live music and craft beer. This year, organizers have added their very own brew to the mix, with the launch of Blok Steady Ale. As with all the beers on offer, Blok Steady is being offered at discounted rates for Fest-goers who purchase beer bracelets in advance of the big day. Music comes from Vancouver's The Belle Game, local chanteuse Vinchelle Woods and indie headliners Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, who finish the night off on the Jerk Hut Stage.

Philadelphia Film Festival, October 17-27
Back for an incredible 22nd year, the Philadelphia Film Festival celebrates the very best in international and homegrown talent. Presented by the Philadelphia Film Society, this year's event will screen more than 100 films, and play host to industry panels, Q & A's and other special events taking place all over the city.

Harry Potter Weekend, October 18-19
Chestnut Hill will transform into Hogsmeade, home of the Harry Potter adventures. Things kick off in magical style on the Friday with an opening ceremony and pub crawl. The next day, spectators can watch the Quidditch tournament at Chestnust Hill College, and restaurants and shops all over Philly are participating in this pre-Halloween dose of wizardry.

Terror Behind the Walls, October 1-November 9
In what's expected to be a real highlight of this year's Halloween festivities, the Eastern State Penitentiary is opening its cell doors for more than a month of creepy goings-on. Regarded as one of the best haunted house experiences in the country, the prison is using top-notch sets, 200 actors, digital sound effects and animatronics to chilling effect.

Pennhurst Asylum, October 1-November 2
Another purportedly haunted Philly monolith is the Pennhurst Asylum. Throughout October, it's hosting a series of terrifying tours including the 'Pennhurst Haunted Attraction', a hospital themed experience that will chill you to the core, and 'Ghost Hunt,' which lets visitors guide themselves – armed only with a flashlight – through what is supposed to be the most haunted part of the asylum.
